Cytoprotective activity

The crude ethanolic extract of P. peltatum leaves were fractionated into the Hexane, Chloroform, Ethyl Acetate, n-Butanol and water fractions. The extract and fractions were subjected to a variety of in-house antioxidant assays including DPPH and  hydroxyl radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation, and protection of cultured mammalian cells from the lethal doses of hydrogen peroxide. The antioxidant activity was determined in a minimum of four determinations and compared with a known antioxidant compound Rutin. The results showed that the plant is packed full of potent antioxidants and the Ethyl Acetate fraction contained most of the active principles.
