HERBAL ANALYSIS: CHROMATOGRAPHY

In drug discovery researches from natural sources, such as plants and animals, crude extracts of specimens containing hundreds of compounds are often used for initial biological screening. Once a hit extract is identified, we need to isolate/separate active principles by using various chromatographic techniques such as HPLC, TLC, GC, etc.

Chromatographic separation techniques  are also used for the  identification of herbal drug constituents in a crude mixture: i.e.  STANDARDISATION of crude  drug preparations and  essential oils.

The selection of a specific chromatographic technique to be used for separation of mixtures requires knowledge and experience  both on the chemistry of the possible constituents in question as well as   chromatographic techniques. Applying crude samples through the wrong chromatographic method not only give inadequate separations and inaccurate results but also could destroy expensive columns and loss of precious samples. Please click here for more information on chromatographic principles and theory! Further notes on modes of chromatography and  their applications are also available via this link.

Our core chromatographic systems for herbal medicines quality control and metabolic profiling are  based on:

HPLC fingerprint analysis

Gas Chromatography (GC) study

GC-MS analysis of essential oils

LC-MS analysis and metabolic profiling
