10 June 2015
Dr Solomon Habtemariam BSc, MSc, PhD, PGDipMS, FRSc

Erythrophleum ivorense. Growing  to over 40 m high, this  West African tree is widely exploited for timber production. The stem and root barks are also widely traded for medicinal uses.

We gave special emphasis to the root bark as there were  no previous scientific studies on it. In this study, we employed pharmacological and phytochemistry tools to establish the scientific basis for the various  traditional medicinal uses.

First, we established  an antiinflammatory assay model in chicks as a viable alternative  to that in rats. Using this model, we demonstrated that  the root bark possesses antiinflammatory effect in line with its traditional uses.

Using the bioassay as a guide, we isolated the active principles. Through comprehensive chemical analysis including X-Ray crystallography, we identified one of the active principles as a novel diterpene  (picture below) that we named  Erythroivorensin.

We thank, our hard working collaborators at KNUST, Kumasi,  Ghana; University College London and The EPSRC National Mass Spectroscopy Laboratory (Swansea).
